Changing, Refunding or Cancelling a China Train Ticket
Chinese rail tickets can be changed and refunded, but the rules are tied to how close you are to departure. Understanding the timing is most of the battle.
The basic principle
A refund returns your money and cancels the seat. A change moves you to a different train, date or seat, and is generally cheaper than refunding and rebooking because you keep the value of the original ticket.
Both are governed by China Railway rules rather than by the booking agent, and the fee depends mainly on how long before departure you act. The exact percentages are set by the railway and change from time to time, so confirm the current figure at the moment you make the change.
Timing matters more than anything else
The further ahead you act, the smaller the cost. Refunds requested well before departure typically carry a modest percentage fee; as departure approaches the fee rises sharply, and once the train has left the station the ticket generally cannot be refunded at all.
There is usually a short window after departure during which you can still change to a later train on the same day, but this is a concession rather than a right, and it depends on availability. Do not rely on it.
If you miss your train
Go to the ticket office at the station and ask about changing to a later service the same day. Staff can sometimes move you if there is space, and the original fare is usually credited against the new one. If the day’s trains are full, the ticket is generally lost.
This is one of the strongest arguments for arriving early. A taxi stuck in Beijing traffic has cost more travellers their ticket than almost anything else.
How to actually request a change or refund
If you booked through an agent, contact them — they hold the booking record and can act on it. If you booked directly on the official channel, you can do it yourself in the app or at a station ticket office.
Have your booking reference and passport to hand. Changes are subject to seat availability on the new train, so have a fallback time in mind before you start.
How long refunds take
The railway processes the cancellation quickly, but the money returning to your card depends on your bank and the payment route. International card refunds commonly take five to fifteen business days, and the service fee portion may be treated differently from the fare.
Keep your cancellation confirmation until the money appears. If it has not arrived after three weeks, that is the document you will need.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change to an earlier train?
Yes, subject to availability. Changes work in both directions, earlier or later, as long as seats remain and you are within the permitted window.
Can I refund just one passenger on a multi-passenger booking?
Usually yes, because each passenger holds an individual ticket even when booked together. The refund rules apply per ticket.
What if the railway cancels my train?
If China Railway cancels a service, you are entitled to a full refund or a change without the usual fee. This is one of the few cases where the timing penalty does not apply.
Can I give my ticket to someone else?
No. Tickets are real-name and tied to the passport number on the booking. They cannot be transferred, sold or gifted.
