About the station

Lanzhou West is the high-speed hub and the station you want for G and D trains. It opened with the Xi’an–Lanzhou high-speed line and is far larger and newer than the central station, with the wide concourses and clear bilingual signage that come with recent construction.

From here the high-speed network runs east toward Xi’an and Zhengzhou and west toward Xining, with services continuing onto the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed line toward Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Ürümqi.

Because it is the newer station, it is also further from the historic centre. If you are staying near the Yellow River waterfront or the old town, factor in the metro ride.

Getting to and from Lanzhou

Metro Line 1 connects Lanzhou West to Lanzhou station and the city centre. This is the fastest and most predictable option and avoids the road congestion around the station approach.

The station is a major interchange for the airport rail link, which makes flight-to-train connections here easier than at the central station.

What catches travellers out here

  • Tickets are printed with the full Chinese station name, and 兰州西 and 兰州 look similar in a hurry. Read the last character before you commit to a station.
  • The station is large, and the walk from the metro exit to the departure hall takes longer than you might expect. Twenty minutes is not too conservative.
